Belfast Neurology Recall – Misdiagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease

O’Reilly Stewart recently obtained a settlement of £75,000.00 on behalf of the next of kin for our client who sadly passed award during the course of her medical negligence claim. Dionne Darragh dealt with this matter.  The case relates to substandard care provided by a Consultant Neurologist.

Our client originally sought treatment in 2003 for a tremor she had developed in her right hand. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and commenced treatment for same. No re-evaluation of this diagnosis took place until 2017, at which time, our client was informed by an alternative Consultant Neurologist that she did not have Parkinson’s disease and that there was never any evidence to suggest that she had Parkinson’s disease.

We were instructed to investigate the standard of care and treatment provided. We obtained copies of our client’s clinical records and instructed independent Neurology, Stroke Medicine and Psychiatry experts to prepare independent reports. It was our experts’ opinion that the Consultant Neurologist breached their duty of care in diagnosing our client incorrectly with Parkinson’s disease and that our client went on to suffer from significant symptoms and side effects as result of the prescription and use of dopaminergic agents to treat the Parkinson’s disease which they did not have.

High Court proceedings were issued in order to progress our client’s case and it was ultimately agreed that damages of £75,000.00 would be paid to our client’s next of kin.

Commenting on the conclusion the case, our client’s family said:

We would just like to thank Dionne and her team for all the hard work and dedication in this long and complex case. Dionne was professional, understanding and honest throughout. I would have no hesitation in recommending her to anyone.”
