Laparoscopic surgery, or keyhole surgery as it is more commonly known, involves the insertion of a telescope into the abdominal cavity for the examination and treatment of abdominal organs.
Keyhole surgery is used frequently to undertake procedures such as cholecystectomy (gallbladder surgery), bowel surgery, hernia repair and upper gastrointestinal surgery including repair of hiatal hernias. Difficulties arising from laparoscopic surgical procedures include vascular injuries (injuries to major blood vessels) and bowel injury. These injuries are sustained due to the insertion of sharp instruments into the abdominal cavity. There are also problems specifically related to certain types of operations such as gallbladder removal. Bile duct injury can occur, and it if does it can cause serious loss and damage to a patient.
