350 Patients affected in Urology Services Inquiry

10 August 2023

It has been reported by BBC Northern Ireland that in excess of 350/two thirds of former patients of retired Consultant Urologist, Mr Aidan O’Brien, have required changes to their care and treatment further to the Southern Health and Social Care Urology Lookback Review.

Significantly, patients being treated for urological cancers and renal stone disease will also be contacted by the Trust. It is understood that 2,112 patients have had their records examined.

The Trust has also advised that any private patients of Mr O’Brien who have concerns about their treatment can contact the Trust.

The Department of Health has acknowledged “the upset, distress and anxiety these matters have caused to the patients and families affected.”

The Independent Public Inquiry into Urology Services is due to recommence hearing from witnesses in September 2023.

We continue to act for a number of affected patients and their families and await further updates from the Inquiry later in 2023.
